Whether you are a new or experienced runner, keeping track of your runs in an organised way is always a good idea. The Strava app provides a way for runners to log their runs and provides the same engagement you would get on any other social network. The only difference is that this is more like a social network for runners.
If you don’t mind having one more app control your life, then the Strava fitness app is just what you need. Seriously though, this is one of the best apps for runners mostly because it is more than just an app. It’s a place where you can log your runs, discover new routes and connect with other runners like you.
A few things to note about Strava:
- You can track your physical activity on the app
- You can connect your fitness tracker to the app
- It’s a great way to connect with other runners
Features of the Strava App
So, the app has both a free and premium version. The premium version provides more features but, there’s a lot you can do with the free version.
- The Flyover feature lets users replay their previous activities. That is only available on the Strave app
- Users can see recent activities on routes by tapping “See Details” in Maps. It will then display recent activities by other athletes on the selected routes
- Check route terrain to see the difficulty of any route under Maps
- You can create your routes or save routes that the app suggests to you and find them under My Routes
- Send messages and chat with other Strava athletes on the app. It is great for connecting with your community
- You can also create or join group challenges via the app. You can invite up to 199 athletes to join your group challenge
- Use the “Perceived Exertion” function to record how hard your workout felt. Choose Easy, Moderate and Max Effort. That serves as an alternative to heart rate
- Share your experience with other athletes including workout, gear tips, recommendations and lots more. And, read what other athletes have posted as well

It is worth noting that although Strava is used by runners, it can be used by other athletes as well. The app is suitable for bikes, hiking, walking and lots more.
Is Strava Premium Worth it?
There is a free version of the app and it comes with several features. To be fair, you probably could use the free version and not miss out on anything. However, if you want to go hardcore, then the premium version might be worth considering.
Premium features include segment leaderboards where you can see your segment performance and compare the performances of other athletes. There is also the advanced training feature, which is only available on Strava Premium. Here you can set periodic goals, log your training, track fitness and fatigue levels and so much more.
How to Get the App
Strava has both mobile and web versions. The mobile version is available on Android and iOS devices and can be downloaded from the Play Store or the App Store. Once that’s done, the next step is to create your Strava account using your Facebook or Google account. Alternatively, you could shun either and use an email address and a password.
Once you’ve confirmed your email (if you used an email address), follow the promptings and create your profile. After setting up your account, you can go to settings and customise everything else.
Finally, there are other apps like RunKeeper or MapMyRun that runners can use. What we like about Strava though is the multifunctionality and the community-centredness. If you do not already use a fitness app and you’re considering getting one, then we recommend the Strava app.
